You may have heard recently about diamonds being associated with conflicts in certain African countries such as Sierra Leone and Angola. In the recent past, diamonds from these counties were sold to fund rebel activities. These "conflict diamonds" amounted to less than 4% of worldwide production, however they had a very serious impact on the citizens of these countries.

Conflict Diamonds The diamond and jewellery industry has recognized the impact that these stones make and have taken steps to ensure that these diamonds do not make it onto the world diamond market. DeBeers and the World Diamond Council (a newly formed international body recognized by the United Nations) have created a system of international certification and controls from the diamond mines to the cutting centres around the world to guarantee that all diamonds purchased from DeBeers are conflict free. |
